I was recently reminded of this passage of scripture in Luke 10:38-41,

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a]Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Martha, a woman (who owned HER home) was entertaining Jesus. Martha had invited the Master to dine with her the text suggests that she took it upon herself to do all the work and was frustrated because her sister Mary had taken the position as a disciple and was sitting at the Lord’s feet. Mary had decided that the MOMENT she was in with the GIVER OF LIFE needed to be seized and she gave Him and it her undivided attention.

As Martha grumbled, she thought her deeds or goodytwoshoeness, was going to win her points with Jesus. I am sure His response surprised her. He said, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a]Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Let that sink in.

I have been sinking in it for the last week or so. Only a FEW things are needed and the chief thing; time with God is what should never be taken away.

My, my, my.

I am such a go getter. Such a doer. Always accomplishing… that I forget how important it is to just SIT with God and just BE.

I do not always have to be doing or saying something. I do not always have to respond or initiate. I am learning right now how to relish in the quiet and not allow anyone to TAKE THAT FROM ME.

Martha wanted Jesus to intervene and tell Mary that she was not doing enough and Jesus said, No. I am not going to take this moment from her.

I am returning to what truly matters and in the quiet my way is becoming clear.

Silence truly is golden.
